Meet 4 of the Canna-Family Members: CBD, THC, CBG, and CBN

Jan 19, 2023 | FocoOrganics

I know you’ve seen these combinations of letters floating around whether online or at your natural grocery store, but what do they mean? And, most importantly, what do they help achieve? In this Hemp + Heart Journal we explore with a little extra depth what each compound found in the cannabis plant means.

These compounds are only 4 of over 100 compounds found in these amazing plants.

Exploring the differences between the cannabinoids: CBD, THC, CBG, and CBN

Cannabinoids are a group of compounds found in the Cannabis plant that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). There are over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis, each with unique effects and benefits. The four most common cannabinoids are CBD, THC, CBG, and CBN. Understanding the differences between these four cannabinoids can help you choose the best product for your desired effect.

CBD

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the most abundant cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. It is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t get you “high”, and is used for a variety of health benefits, including reducing inflammation, pain relief, and anxiety relief. CBD is found in both hemp and marijuana plants, and is legal in most countries.

THC

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most well-known cannabinoid. It is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, meaning it is responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana. THC has been found to have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, and is being used to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is important to note that THC is only legal in many countries for medical or recreational use, and is still illegal in some areas.

CBG

CBG, or cannabigerol, is a lesser-known cannabinoid that is gaining popularity for its potential health benefits. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties, and is being studied for its potential to treat a variety of medical conditions.

CBN

CBN, or cannabinol, is another lesser-known cannabinoid, and is thought to have sedative effects. It is most often found in aged cannabis, as it is produced when THC is exposed to oxygen and heat. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, and is being studied for its potential to treat glaucoma and other medical conditions.

Closing Thought:

Cannabinoids are powerful compounds that can offer a variety of health benefits. Understanding the differences between CBD, THC, CBG, and CBN can help you choose the best product for your desired effect.
